I spent the next several dreams with the nurse, revisiting various challenging phases of my life, mostly from my teens and twenties. These were times when I felt as if I'd made a mistake and had some regrets about my actions. Each time I judged something, the nurse asked me to first accept that I judged it and then to release that judgment by recognizing the normalcy of how I had acted at the time. The nurse explained that we all do the best we can at all times, all the time. No exceptions. Even if we are ignorant at the time, ignorance does only what ignorance can do, and accepting that as normal was the first step to peace. She didn't suggest that we shouldn't be responsible for our actions, only that based on our level of consciousness, those actions were all normal. That idea really challenged me, but I did believe it was reasonable and actually sounded a lot like what Larry had said about Chris. I also began to believe that with some time and effort, I could actually come to accept myself.

In the middle of one conversation with the nurse, I took a deep breath and said, “You said that you'd help me experience Acceptance when I was better prepared. I'd like to do that now.”

“As you wish. I do want to warn you, though, that when you feel Unconditional Acceptance, it might be overwhelming.”

I nodded in approval. We were back at the war tent. I saw bombers even closer than before, flying through smoke-filled skies. There were screams coming from the medical tent, and there was blood everywhere. It was still dreadful.

“I don't understand. How is this Acceptance?”

“You will want to experience it through my eyes,” she prompted.

I knew what she was suggesting, and as I'd done with the gull and crab, I imagined that I was her. Immediately, I felt the powerful Essence of the beggar again. It was even deeper and more beautiful than the first time I'd experienced it in the city. In my rapture, dream or not, I was again home.

I looked around and saw everything exactly as I saw it all before, but it felt different. It felt like a surreal dream. Instead of disgust, I felt a sense of awe and fascination. I closed my eyes and even more deeply felt the Essence within her—within me. It was perfect. Complete perfection.

I don't know if I was “there” for a few seconds or hours, but when I emerged, I wiped the tears of joy that began to form and lay back on the ground.

“How long was I in that state?” I asked.

“You have always been there and always will be, remember?” she asked.

“Yes, I mean … I think I do. Like before, you … this … feels brand new to me and, at the same time, like something I've always known.”

“Tell me about your experience.”

“It was overwhelming, but in an amazing way. There was something very strange as well. Instead of wanting everything to go away, I wanted to experience more of it.
